Different by Design

At Meeting Street Elementary @Brentwood, we optimise our instructional capacity through four elements: Time, Talent, Focus and Partnership. Together, these 4 elements make us different by design.

Extended Time

At MSE @Brentwood, we believe that extended time at school makes a great difference in childhood education. Therefore, we provide two additional years of high quality education in both Pre-K3 and Pre-K4, prior to kindergarten.

These two years are vital in child development. Studies show that it is within these two years that the widest gap in reading and learning is formed.   Our school day is extended, commencing at 7:30 am, with dismissal at 3:30 pm, offering more classroom time and structure to a student's day.  In addition, we offer a free extended-day program from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm.

Roughly 75% of our student body utilizes the after-school program, in which athletics, academics, and art programs are offered. Dinner is provided at extended-day, and the same expectations of excellence are expected from both students and teachers.  Studies have proven that idle students fall behind their counterparts during the summer break, but just 10 extra days of school per year can help reverse this trend. Therefore, our academic year is expanded by 2.5 weeks to prevent summer "slippage." 

 


Teaching Talent

Teachers at Meeting Street Elementary @Brentwood are held to the highest standards of excellence. The recruiting process for instructional staff is rigorous and competitive, allowing us to be extremely selective in our search for effective, highly trained, and passionate instructors.   

MSEB's Innovative Teaching Fellows program supplies each classroom with one teacher and one teaching fellow. Two teachers per classroom provide more structure, allowing for distributed duties and leadership between teachers. 

In order to maintain an environment of professional development, MSEB performs frequent coaching and evaluations of both teacher performance and teacher satisfaction. Professional Learning Communities and teacher workdays further encourage our cohesive group of like-minded instructors equipped to meet the needs of our students. 


Whole Child Focus

At MSEB, we take a holistic approach to education. We provide support for social and emotional development with on site therapists and trained instructors.   

Our interactive, research-based curriculum is designed to strengthen character skills that most highly correlate with success in college, careers, and communities.

Our curriculum is rigorous and our students are held to high expectations both socially and academically.  We continually assess the development of character traits in our students, while focusing on their health and wellness by encouraging healthy habits and lifestyles. 

Our wraparound health services meet the needs of the whole child, and our curriculum and community partnerships are designed to enhance healthy living. We invest in parent and family health education information services to further enhance student health. 



Family and Community Partnerships 

At MSEB, we encourage strong relationships between the school community and our students' families in order to strengthen the educational experience of our students both in the classroom and at home. Parent participation takes many forms, including volunteer positions, parent events, and community celebration every Friday afternoon.

Partnerships with families to support the education of our young children   MSEB collaborates with community leaders and Charleston's business community to provide learning opportunities and mentors for our students.
